Ruins to ruins - A Mad Max kind of ride

March 25th, 2005 · No Comments

We left Palenque this morning, we went to the Cascadia (water fall) It was a lovely sight, water fell about 125 feet into a dark green pool, it was a cool and refreshing place for a swim, only problem? About 500 other people had the same idea! We did manage a quick dip and it felt good. Then it was back on the bikes for our next destination, Balize.

First we had to go due east about 300 miles, then a left over the border. We made about 260 miles of the route, it was a rugged and hot crossing. The land here is flat as a billiard table and brown. A few sparse trees on the horizon and herds of Oxen here and there. They had burned both ditches along the road and it looked like something out of Mad Max. Only they would have never gotten Mel Gibson out here… In places the brush was still on fire and this brought up the temprature another 30 degrees or so. It was already a scorcher, waves of hot wind would hit us. I had soaked my self with water to help keep cool but the air was like out f a blast furnace. I think if we had stopped where there was fire, we may have melted or at least been burnt alive. At times this sounded like a good plan.

The road was straight as an arrow for hours, we can only hope Balize is worth the trip. Sure the photo´s on the web site show a beautiful place but if it is any thing like todays ride, I´m selling the bike and flying home!

We stopped for the night in a small village, it is very nice and modern, our room (tomb) had air conditioning and luke warm water. It also has watch turkeys around so no one will mess with the bikes.

Fried chicken for dinner and then off to the computer shop. We are on another slow hookup so no photos tonight. Infact, this key board is so rusty it is like typing on a manual type writer. My hands are cramping just this quicly.

I just wanted to say hey, let every one know we are doing all right, no problems here. We hope for a nice time at our next stop along the coast. We plan on doing some snorkeling and may possibly get to the famous Blue Hole.

I´ll write soon and post photos ASAP. We have some video to down load as well as audio of Chuck entering the cave, I hope he uses his ¨Command¨of his pig spanish in this clip.

Nite all, I´ll talk to ya soon, keep those cards and letters coming.

Charlie
